Located
only 100 miles east La Ceiba, connected by an excellent
paved highway, lies one of the oldest cities of Honduras.
Trujillo lies close to the point where Christopher Columbus
first put his foot in mainland America, this on his fourth
and last voyage in 1502. Trujillo had a difficult time during
the colonial years, as it was attacked by pirates on several
occasions. Unfortunately, most of the old, truly colonial
heritage of Trujillo was lost during these attacks, however,
the fortress of Santa Barbara offers mute testimony of days
gone by, located within the largest natural bay in Central
America, the beaches of Trujillo are some of the best in
the north coast of Honduras. The natural environment around
the city offers a lot, with a national park and a wildlife
refuge all within walking distance of downtown. A good variety
of hotels offer the beach worshippers a good alternative
to stay and enjoy the towns atmosphere. The Garifuna´s
influence in Trujillo is apparent throughout town, as Barrio
Cristales is itself a Garifuna village.
